title: Exporting Notes
description: Export a note as PDF, Word (DOCX), HTML, or plain text
---

Your notes are already plain Markdown files, so you can open them in any editor. When you need to send a note to someone who doesn't use Markdown, export it as a PDF, a Word document, a web page, or a text file.

> PDF, DOCX, and HTML export are available with a Pro License. Plain text export is free.

### Opening the Export Dialog

Open the note you want to export, then use any of these:

- Click the three-dot menu in the note's breadcrumb, choose **Export**, and pick **PDF**, **HTML**, **DOCX**, or **Plain text**.
- Press `Cmd/Ctrl + K` and search for **Export**.
- Choose **Export Note** from the app menu (the File menu on macOS, the app menu on Windows).

The command bar and app menu open the dialog with PDF selected. You can switch formats in the dialog. Without a Pro License, use the breadcrumb menu's **Plain text** option to export as text.

### Export Options

The Export dialog has these options:

| Option | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Name** | The exported file's name. It defaults to the note's name, and the extension is added for you. |
| **Format** | PDF, DOCX, HTML, or TXT. |
| **Page** | PDF only. A4, US Letter, US Legal, or **Long Running Page**, which puts the whole note on one tall page with no page breaks. |
| **Images** | DOCX and HTML only. **Embed** stores images inside the file so it works on its own. **Remove** leaves images out. |
| **Properties** | Shown when the note has properties. **Include** adds them as a table at the top (PDF, DOCX, HTML) or as YAML frontmatter (TXT). |
| **Title** | Turn on **Add note name as heading** to put the note's name at the top as a heading. |
| **Location** | Where the file is saved: your workspace folder, Documents, Downloads, or Desktop. |

Octarine remembers your page size, image, properties, title, and location choices for the next export.

When the export finishes, a notification shows the file name with **Open File** and **Reveal in Finder** buttons.

### What Each Format Includes

- **PDF**: images, [Media Stacks](/editor/media-stacks), tables, code blocks, math, and [Mermaid](/editor/mermaid) diagrams, with clickable links. Pages break between lines, images, and table rows instead of cutting through them, and a heading is never left alone at the bottom of a page. Resized images keep the size they have in the note.
- **DOCX**: a Word document you can edit in Word, Pages, or Google Docs. Mermaid diagrams are added as images.
- **HTML**: a single web page with simple built-in styling. With **Embed** on, images are stored inside the file, so you can send the one file.
- **TXT**: the note's Markdown source.

> PDF export works on macOS and Windows. On Linux, export to HTML and print it from your browser instead.

#### Quick Answers

### Can I export a note to Word?

Yes. Choose DOCX in the Export dialog. DOCX export requires a Pro License.
### Can I export a whole folder?

Export works on one note at a time. Your notes are plain Markdown files, so you can also copy them straight from your workspace folder.
