title: Merging Notes
description: Combine several notes into one, in the order you choose
---

Merge Notes combines the content of two or more notes into a single note. Use it to consolidate scattered meeting notes, fold drafts together, or clean up notes that cover the same topic.

> Merging notes requires a Pro License.

### Starting a Merge

There are three ways to open the **Merge notes** dialog:

- **From the file tree**: select two or more notes (`Cmd/Ctrl + Click` or `Shift + Click`), then click the merge button in the bulk action bar, or right-click and choose **Merge notes**. The selection can't include folders.
- **From a note**: click the three-dot menu in the note's breadcrumb and choose **Merge with…**. The dialog opens with the current note in the list.
- **From the Command Bar**: press `Cmd/Ctrl + K` and run **Merge Notes**.

### Choosing the Notes and Their Order

The dialog lists the notes to merge. Notes are combined from top to bottom.

- Drag a note by its handle to change its position.
- Click **Add note to merge** to search for another note.
- Remove a note from the list with the button beside it.

You need at least two notes to merge.

### Choosing Where the Result Goes

Click the destination menu at the top of the dialog to pick one of two options:

- **First note in list**: the merged content replaces the body of the first note. That note keeps its location and properties. Properties from the other notes are not copied.
- **New note**: Octarine creates a new note, named **Merged note** unless you enter another name, in the first note's folder. Every original note is left unchanged.

Each note's body is added in order, separated by a blank line.

### After Merging

Octarine keeps the original notes. A notification shows how many notes were merged, with two buttons:

- **Open merged note** opens the result in a tab.
- **Delete merged notes** moves the original notes to the Trash. If you merged into the first note, that note is kept.

The notification closes after a few seconds. If you miss it, delete the originals from the file tree as usual.

> Read-only notes can't be merged. Make them editable first. See [Read-only Notes](/note-management/read-only-notes).

#### Quick Answers

### Does merging delete the original notes?

No. Octarine keeps the originals. Choose **Delete merged notes** in the notification that appears after merging to move them to the Trash.
### What happens to properties when notes are merged?

Merging into the first note keeps that note's properties. Merging into a new note creates it without properties. Properties from the other notes are not combined.
